First Responder Workshop

The First Responder Workshop held on August 21-22, 2024, was a notable success, marking a significant step forward for the burgeoning First Responder Network. The workshop brought together experts and practitioners to delve into crucial aspects of wildlife response, and it covered a broad array of topics essential for effective first response in the field.

The agenda was robust and well-rounded, kicking off with an introduction to the African penguin population, which set the stage for understanding the context and urgency of wildlife conservation. Following that, participants learned about the mission and objectives of the Namibian Foundation for the Conservation of Seabirds (NAMCOB), which provides the framework and support for first responders in marine wildlife emergencies.

Attendees at the First Responder Workshop

A key segment of the workshop focused on defining what a first responder is and their responsibilities. This foundational talk was crucial in setting clear expectations and guidelines for participants, ensuring they were well-equipped to handle the challenges they might face.

The workshop also featured an engaging discussion on seals. This was complemented by detailed sessions on personal protective equipment (PPE), hygiene practices, wildlife rescue techniques, transportation, and stabilization. Each of these topics is vital for ensuring the safety and efficacy of wildlife rescue operations.

One of the highlights was the contribution from Dr. David Roberts, a veterinarian from SANCCOB. Dr. Roberts provided valuable insights into triage and pain management, which are critical for the immediate care of injured or sick animals. His expertise helped participants understand the nuances of veterinary care in the field and the importance of proper triage in improving outcomes for wildlife.

Feeding regimes were also covered, emphasizing the importance of proper nutrition in wildlife rehabilitation. The workshop provided practical advice on feeding practices to ensure the health and recovery of rescued animals.

Overall, the workshop was a great start to building a cohesive and knowledgeable first responder network. It offered a comprehensive overview of the key elements involved in wildlife response and fostered a sense of community among participants. The diverse range of topics and the expert insights provided have laid a strong foundation for future training and collaboration in wildlife rescue efforts.
