On October 23rd, 2024, we marked a significant milestone in the conservation of the endangered African penguin, a species on the brink of extinction. In collaboration with our esteemed partners at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) and AZA SAFE African Penguin, the dedicated team at NAMCOB successfully deployed and installed 25 artificial nest boxes on the shores of Possession Island in Lüderitz, Namibia.

As natural burrowing sites continue to vanish due to human activities like guano harvesting and the impacts of erosion, these artificial nests are crucial for safeguarding the future of the African penguin. By providing alternative nesting opportunities, we aim to significantly enhance the breeding success of this vulnerable species.

Artificial nest boxes have proven effective across the globe, with different designs being used for species such as Humboldt and Galapagos penguins, as well as Little Penguins in Australia and New Zealand. Our specially designed nest boxes improve the microclimate for the African penguins, their eggs, and chicks—offering them much-needed protection from predators and reducing the energy required to maintain optimal temperatures in their nests.

This successful installation could not have been possible without the invaluable contributions of our dedicated partners and supporters. A heartfelt thanks to:

  • Officials from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR)
  • DebMarine and ilogistics for arranging for the transportation of the nests from South Africa
  • Kevin Graham, Dallas Zoo and Project Coordinator, AZA SAFE African Penguin
  • Patty McGill (Ph.D.), National Aviary and Program Leader, AZA SAFE African Penguin
  • Kurt Hundgen, National Aviary
  • Jess Phillips, Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, NAMCOB, and AZA SAFE African Penguin

Together, we are making strides towards securing a brighter future for the African penguin. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor the impact of these nest boxes on the breeding success of this incredible species.
